What is SSD?

Ever heard of a hardisk without a spinning motor inside? Yes, there is already a hardisk without a physical motor spinning inside…

They called it SSD..meaning “SOLID STATE DEVICE”. Although this technology was already implemented since 1970’s, it was not so popular due to high price. In analogy to USB flash, you can say SSD is a bigger USB flash drive as the technology is almost similar to it.

Some of the advantages of SSD:

  • faster reading of files as there is no spinning motor
  • low power consumption
  • no vibration and sound
  • longer failure time as no moving mechanical parts inside
  • high resistance to shock as there is no moving parts making it useful for mobile use such as laptops

Although a lot of advantages, it also has disadvantages:

  • lower capacity compared to normal hardisk. currently 80 gb as commercial product from Intel
  • limited write erase cycles just like the USB flash drive. based on the Intel X25-M data sheet, it has a write endurance of 1 petabyte of lifetime random writes equalling to around 1000 terabytes.. huh ..
  • Mean Time Before Failure(MTBF) is also measured as 2,000,000 hours.

As of to date, only Intel has the best SSD product in the market today..

You want to see what is inside the SSD? Take a look…

Here is a video of the review of SSD Intel X25-M 80 GB.

How to install nvidia drivers using Fedora 9

Lately i installed Fedora to make me more familiar with command line.  Formerly i’m using Slackware but then i wanted to be familiar with Red hat linux and the closest free linux distribution is Fedora.

I don’t want to have a dual booting since it will write to my main hardisk MBR and will later have problem on my windows if i want to remove the linux.

Important tip:  How not to write on your main disk MBR? You dedicate one separate hardisk for your linux. Then during installation of linux, remove the signal cable of your main hardisk. With this, it will write mbr on your separate hardisk.

Cloud Computing in Layman’s term

Most of you have heard this term over the internet and news and do you ever wonder what is it in its simplest definition? Where do you see the cloud? You can see it above us? right? And there is only one place you can see it and it is above us..In analogy and in layman’s term, we can say cloud computing is a server based application that offer services for the users. For me in layman’s term, a web based email can be considered as a cloud computing. Why? It is because from the wikipedia, cloud computing is defined as a “ style of computing in which IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service”,[2] allowing users to access technology-enabled services from the Internet (”in the cloud”)[3]without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over the technology infrastructure that supports them”. From here we can see internet means cloud and web-based email is accessed via internet.
